Two hours south of Samarkand, at 2,400 m altitude, Uzbekistan hides a juniper forest older than Islam. Zaamin is the country's first national park, its coolest summer escape, and almost every foreign guidebook forgets it exists. Here's the 2026 fix.

When Tashkent hits 42°C in July, locals who know disappear into Zaamin. It's Uzbekistan's oldest national park (est. 1926 as a reserve, upgraded to national park in 1976), tucked into the Turkestan Range on the border with Tajikistan. Cool alpine air, thousand-year-old juniper trees, wildflower meadows, mineral springs, Soviet-era sanatoriums still charging $30 a night. Almost zero foreign tourists. Where is Zaamin exactly?

Zaamin National Park sits in Jizzakh Region, on the northern slopes of the Turkestan Range, roughly 260 km south of Tashkent and 130 km east of Samarkand. Altitude inside the park ranges from 1,760 m to 3,500 m, with the main visitor zone around 2,400 m — high enough that summer daytime temperatures stay 18–25°C while the lowlands bake.

How to get to Zaamin in 2026

From Tashkent

Fastest: Afrosiyob high-speed train Tashkent → Jizzakh (2h 10m, from 90,000 UZS), then a pre-arranged taxi from Jizzakh station to Zaamin sanatorium (110 km, 90 min, 350,000–450,000 UZS one-way). Total door-to-door about 4 hours. Cheapest: shared taxi from Tashkent's Ippodrom stand direct to Zaamin town (5–6 hours, 200,000 UZS per seat) then a local car up to the park (45 min, 100,000 UZS).

From Samarkand

Yandex Go or private driver via the M39 → Jizzakh → Zaamin road, 2h 45m, 700,000–900,000 UZS one-way for the whole car. Weekend trips are easy — leave Samarkand at 08:00, be hiking by 11:00.

• Zaamin Sanatorium: legendary Soviet health resort at 2,400 m. Full board $30–60/night, mineral baths, phyto-therapy, giant balconies over the juniper valley.

Best hikes and routes

Suffa Plateau viewpoint (easy, 2 hours)

From the sanatorium a well-marked trail climbs 350 m to a broad meadow at 2,750 m with a 180° view of the Turkestan ridge. Wildflowers June–early August. Good for kids.

Kyzyl-Alma waterfall (moderate, 5 hours round-trip)

6 km each way through mixed juniper–maple forest, ending at a 40 m two-stage waterfall. Best in June when snowmelt is strongest. Ranger guide recommended — 300,000 UZS/day.

Guralash summit (hard, 2 days)

Overnight trek to 3,220 m with a wild-camp above the treeline. Requires a permit and a licensed guide, from $180 pp all-inclusive.

Honest verdict

Zaamin will never be Instagram-famous, and that is exactly the point. If Samarkand's tile-fatigue has set in, if you want to see Uzbekistan the way Uzbeks holiday, if you'd rather trade a fifth madrasa for a juniper forest older than the Silk Road — spend two nights here. Nobody who's gone has regretted it.
