Why Is Every Car in Uzbekistan White? Inside the Chevrolet Car Culture

Look down any Tashkent street and the effect is surreal: white car, white car, white car, white car, occasional silver, white car again. Visitors assume it's a rule. It isn't — but the reasons are almost as strange.

Newcomers to Tashkent notice it within about ten minutes of leaving the airport. The traffic is not merely dominated by one brand — it is dominated by one brand in one colour. Rows of white Chevrolet Cobalts, Nexias, Sparks, Malibus and Tracker SUVs, parked nose to tail like a fleet. It is one of the most-asked questions on the Uzbekistan internet, and the answer is a mix of industrial policy, physics and resale maths.

First: why Chevrolet at all?

Because the cars are built here. The plant in Asaka, in the Andijan region of the Fergana Valley, opened in 1996 as UzDaewooAuto, a joint venture with Daewoo of South Korea. After Daewoo's collapse, General Motors took the partnership over in 2008 and the cars were rebadged Chevrolet. The company is known today as UzAuto Motors, and it is one of the country's largest industrial employers.

The import tariff factor

For most of the post-independence period, importing a foreign car into Uzbekistan carried very high duties and excise charges — historically enough to double or more the price of a comparable imported vehicle. That protected the domestic plant and made a locally-built Chevrolet the only rational purchase for the vast majority of buyers. Tariffs have been gradually reduced under the reform programme since 2017, and you now see far more imported Kias, Hyundais, Chinese EVs and second-hand Germans than a decade ago — but the installed base of white Chevrolets is enormous and will take a generation to dilute.

Now the real question: why white?

1. Heat

Tashkent regularly hits 40°C in July, and the south — Termez, Bukhara, the Kyzylkum — goes higher. A white car in direct summer sun is dramatically cooler inside than a black one; the cabin surface temperature difference is enough to matter every single day for four months of the year. In a country where air conditioning is a luxury and shade parking is scarce, white is not fashion, it is thermodynamics.

2. Price and availability from the factory

White has traditionally been the cheapest and most readily available factory colour, with the shortest waiting list. For years, buying a car in Uzbekistan meant joining a queue and paying a deposit — and choosing a non-standard colour meant waiting longer, sometimes months longer, and paying a premium. Most people took the white one that was available now.

3. Resale value

Because everybody wants white, white resells fastest and holds value best. A black or red Cobalt sits on the market. This is a self-reinforcing loop: white is popular, so white resells well, so buyers choose white, so white stays popular.

4. Dust

Central Asian dust is pale and fine. On a white car it is nearly invisible; on a dark car it shows after one drive. In a region where much of the road network runs through steppe and desert, that is a practical daily advantage.

5. Taxi and fleet culture

A very large share of the vehicles on the road are working cars — Yandex Go and Uklon drivers, informal taxis, corporate fleets. Fleet buyers order white in bulk for exactly the reasons above, and half the country moonlights as a taxi driver at some point.

In Uzbekistan you do not choose a colour. You choose white, and then you decide what to hang from the mirror.

What it means for travellers

Honest verdict

The white-Chevrolet phenomenon is the single most photographed piece of accidental national branding in Central Asia, and it exists because a Korean-built factory in the Fergana Valley met forty-degree summers, protective tariffs and a very practical population. It is starting to change — the streets are visibly more colourful than they were in 2015 — so photograph a full street of them while you still can.
