If you have one or two weeks for Central Asia and you're choosing between Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan — pick Uzbekistan. Here's the breakdown.
Sights & history
Uzbekistan is the cultural heart of the Silk Road: Samarkand, Bukhara, Khiva. Four UNESCO sites, all visitable in a single 7-day trip. Kazakhstan is bigger, but its highlights — Charyn Canyon, Big Almaty Lake, the steppe — are scattered across thousands of kilometers and need a 4×4 plus serious time.
Cost
Uzbekistan wins, hands down. A nice meal: $4–8 vs $12–20 in Almaty. Mid-range hotel: $50 vs $90. Train tickets: a fraction of the price.
Food
Both have palov, lagman and shashlik — but Uzbek food is more refined, more varied, and cheaper. The samsa game in Tashkent is unmatched anywhere in Central Asia.
Ease of travel
Uzbekistan has the Afrosiyob high-speed train connecting all four major cities. Kazakhstan's distances mean you'll spend half your trip on planes or 12-hour overnight trains.

First-time Central Asia traveler: Uzbekistan. Already been to Uzbekistan and want wilderness: Kazakhstan. Want both: do Uzbekistan first, then fly Tashkent → Almaty (90 minutes).
