How to See Samarkand in One Day (Without Missing Anything)

One day in Samarkand is brutal but doable. Skip these monuments and you'll regret it — here's the exact order, with timings.
If you only have 24 hours in Samarkand, every minute matters. This route is built around opening hours, light, and walking distances — tested on three separate trips.
08:00 — Registan Square
Be at the gate when it opens (typically 8am). You'll get 45 minutes of empty courtyards before the tour groups arrive. Climb the Ulugh Beg Madrasa minaret if it's open (5,000 UZS bribe to the guard — not officially allowed but well-known).
10:00 — Bibi-Khanym Mosque + Siab Bazaar
Walk 10 minutes north. Bibi-Khanym was once the biggest mosque in the Islamic world. Across the road, Siab Bazaar — buy non bread fresh from the tandoor, dried apricots and halva.
11:30 — Shah-i-Zinda
The single most photogenic place in Uzbekistan. A narrow alley of turquoise tombs stacked on top of each other. Allow 1.5 hours, you'll need every minute.
13:30 — Lunch
Walk back via the bazaar to Platan or Karimbek — proper Uzbek lunch (lagman, shashlik, salad, tea) for under $8.
15:00 — Gur-e-Amir (Timur's tomb)
Smaller than you'd expect, but the interior gold leaf is the best in Central Asia. 30 minutes is enough.
16:00 — Ulugh Beg Observatory
10-minute taxi. The remains of a 15th-century astronomical sextant — Ulugh Beg measured the year to within 25 seconds of modern value, in 1437.
19:00 — Registan light show
From April to October, the Registan plays a 30-minute light and music show at 21:00 (20:00 in shoulder season). Free, the best free thing in Uzbekistan.
If you've got two hours more
Add the Hazrat Khizr Mosque (panorama over Shah-i-Zinda) or Konigil paper village just outside town, where Samarkand silk paper is still made by hand.
