Khiva is the most divisive city in Uzbekistan — either magical or museum-like. Whether you sleep there or not changes the answer completely.

Khiva polarises travelers. Half love it, half find it sterile. The single biggest factor in which camp you land in: whether you spend the night inside the walls.

The case for a day trip

• Itchan Kala (the inner walled city) is small — you can see every monument in 4–5 hours.
• Saves a hotel night and the slow journey time.
• If you're tight on days, gives you more time in Bukhara or Samarkand.

The case for staying overnight

• From 17:00 to 09:00 the tour buses are gone — the walled city is almost yours.
• Sunset and sunrise light on the mud walls is the actual reason you came.
• Itchan Kala hotels are converted madrasas — staying in one is the experience.

Stay one night. Two is too much, zero is a mistake. Arrive late afternoon, walk Itchan Kala at sunset, dinner with the music, dawn climb up Kalta Minor, then catch the late morning flight back. Perfect 18 hours.
