Chimgan & Beldersay: Tashkent's Mountain Day Trip (2026 Hiking + Cable Car Guide)

85 km from Tashkent, the Western Tian Shan opens up: 3,309 m peaks, turquoise Charvak reservoir, a Soviet-era chairlift that still works, and shashlik grilled at 2,200 m. Here's the honest 2026 day-trip playbook.

Tashkent locals don't talk about Chimgan to tourists — partly because it's their weekend escape and partly because the foreign-language internet barely covers it. After three separate trips in 2025–26, here's everything you need to do it as a proper day trip without a tour.

What & where

Chimgan (Chimyon) is a village + ski resort at 1,620 m in the Ugam-Chatkal National Park, ~85 km northeast of Tashkent. Greater Chimgan peak (Katta Chimgan) rises to 3,309 m. Right next to it is Beldersay, a separate ski area with a working summer chairlift up to 2,200 m. Below both, the Charvak reservoir is a 30 km turquoise lake people swim in from June to September.

Getting there (2026 prices)

• Yandex Go from central Tashkent to Chimgan village: 280,000–350,000 UZS one-way (~$22–28), 1h45m. Negotiate a round trip with 4-hour wait for ~750,000 UZS ($60).
• Shared marshrutka from Buyuk Ipak Yoli metro to Gazalkent (then taxi up): ~25,000 UZS + 80,000 UZS taxi from Gazalkent. Cheap but slow (3h+).
• Private driver booked through your hotel: 700,000–900,000 UZS for the day including Charvak stop.
• There is no public bus all the way to Chimgan. Don't believe Google.

The Beldersay chairlift (open year-round)

This is the highlight most blogs skip. The single old Soviet chairlift at Beldersay runs in summer (roughly May 15–Oct 15, 10:00–17:00 weather depending) and costs 80,000 UZS round trip (~$6.50). It takes you from 1,550 m to 2,200 m in 20 minutes — open seats, no safety bar by modern standards, dangling skis even in July. The view from the top platform: Greater Chimgan straight ahead, Charvak lake glowing turquoise below, and on a clear day the Kazakh border ridges.

Best hikes by difficulty

• Easy (2h round-trip): from the top of Beldersay chairlift, ridge walk to the radio tower viewpoint. Marked, no scrambling.
• Moderate (5–6h): Beldersay summit (2,866 m) from the upper chairlift station. Add 600 m of elevation, well-trodden path.
• Hard (8–10h): Greater Chimgan summit (3,309 m). Start at Chimgan village by 7 AM, take water for the whole day, descend by 4 PM. Don't attempt solo if it's your first time.
• Lake walk: 4 km flat loop along the Charvak shoreline from Sayyod restaurant — perfect after lunch.

Where to eat

Chimgan village has 20+ shashlik joints along the main road — all roughly the same: lamb shashlik 35,000–45,000 UZS per skewer, fresh non bread baked on site, samsa 12,000 UZS. The standout is 'Sayyod' on the Charvak side: glassed-in terrace over the lake, whole grilled trout for 180,000 UZS (~$14), book ahead on weekends. Bring cash — many small spots still don't take cards.

When to go

Late May–early July: wildflowers everywhere, snow still on the high peaks, daytime 18–25 °C up top. August: hot (28–32 °C even at 2,000 m) but Charvak swimming is perfect. September–October: golden larches, crisp 10–18 °C, the best photography month. December–March: legit ski resort, lift tickets 250,000 UZS/day. Avoid weekends if you can — Saturdays Tashkent empties out and the road jams 20–30 min before Gazalkent.

The unmarked turnoff most tourists miss

On the road from Charvak to Chimgan, ~6 km past the dam, there's an unmarked left turn onto a paved road that climbs to 'Yurtcamp Chimgan' and a viewpoint of the entire Charvak basin you can't see from the main road. Tell your driver: 'Charvak ko'rinish nuqtasi' (Charvak viewpoint). Three minutes' drive, zero crowds, the best 5-minute stop of the day.

What to pack

• Layers — temperature drops 8–10 °C from valley to chairlift top.
• Sun: high-altitude UV is brutal even in October. SPF 50, hat, sunglasses.
• Water: 2 L per person. There are taps in the village but none on the trails.
• Cash in small notes for shashlik, parking (5,000 UZS), lift tickets.
• Swimsuit + microfiber towel if you're stopping at Charvak.

Bottom line

Chimgan is the cleanest one-day escape valve Tashkent has — and it's stayed off the global travel radar precisely because it requires a tiny bit of logistics. Book a round-trip Yandex Go the night before, leave the city by 8 AM, you'll be back for dinner with one of the best mountain days you'll have in Central Asia.
