One hour from Tashkent, the Western Tian Shan drops 1,300 metres of ski terrain that most Europeans have never heard of. In 2026 Amirsoy has 22 pistes, a new 6-seater gondola and lift tickets under $40 a day. Here's the honest guide.
Skiing in Uzbekistan sounds like a joke until you drive 85 km east of Tashkent, climb into the Chatkal branch of the Western Tian Shan, and find yourself standing at 2,290 m looking down on a modern French-built ski resort surrounded by 4,000 m peaks. Uzbekistan has three real ski areas: Amirsoy (opened 2019, the modern flagship), Beldersay (Soviet-era but with the country's steepest legal off-piste) and Chimgan (small, cheap, where locals learn). Amirsoy — the modern resort
- 22 pistes over 25 km — 6 green, 9 blue, 6 red, 1 black.

Beldersay — for advanced skiers
One 3-km single chairlift built in 1980, still operating. The top station at 2,850 m gives access to legal free-ride terrain across the Kumbel ridge — the steepest lift-served slopes in Central Asia, regularly used by the Uzbek freeride national team. Lift pass 150,000 UZS/day (~$12). No ski school worth booking; hire a local mountain guide (400,000 UZS/day) for the powder bowls.
Chimgan — for beginners and families
The oldest resort, right next to Chimgan village. Three drag lifts, two short chairs, a total of 8 km of pistes. Nothing above intermediate but ideal to learn — lift pass 80,000 UZS/day (~$6), lessons 150,000 UZS/hour, board rental 200,000 UZS/day. Full of Uzbek families at weekends.
How to get there from Tashkent
- Amirsoy shuttle: daily bus from Alay Bazaar (Tashkent) at 08:00, returns 17:00. 200,000 UZS round-trip. Book at amirsoy.com the day before.
- Yandex Go from central Tashkent: 350,000–450,000 UZS one-way (about $30), 90 minutes.
- Private car with driver: $60–$80 round-trip, wait time included; ask any hotel to arrange.
- Rental car: only recommended if you have winter tyres and mountain-driving experience — the last 20 km climbs 1,000 m with hairpins.
Where to stay in the mountains
- Amirsoy Resort Hotel (ski-in ski-out, 4-star): $120–$180/night in high season, includes lift discount.
- Amirsoy Mountain Village apartments: $85–$140/night, self-catering, 200 m from lift.
- Beldersay Oromgohi (Soviet-era, updated 2022): $45/night, half-board, wooden cabins near the chairlift.
- Chimgan village guesthouses: $20–$35/night, home-cooked breakfast, no English but Yandex Translate works fine.

Snow report — what to actually expect
The Tian Shan gets classic continental snow: cold, dry, light. Base depths on Amirsoy pistes 2025/26 averaged 90 cm from mid-January to end of February, with two powder resets a month. Sunny days are the norm (250+ per year) — you will ski in a t-shirt at lunchtime and freeze at the top by 16:00. Book late January to early March for the best chance of powder plus reliable cover.
Off-season summer — the same mountains as a hiking base
From May to October the Amirsoy gondola runs as a scenic lift (60,000 UZS return). From the top station you can hike the Kumbel ridge, ride a downhill mountain bike (rental 250,000 UZS/day), or paraglide tandem (2,500,000 UZS, book with Chimgan Fly). Chimgan village is also the base for the classic 3-day Great Chimgan summit trek (3,309 m).
Verdict for foreign skiers
You will not fly to Uzbekistan just to ski — the terrain is smaller than an average Austrian valley. But if you are already visiting between December and March, tag on 2–3 days at Amirsoy. Lift-ticket-to-quality ratio is unbeatable, the food off the slope is Uzbek not fondue, and you can honestly say you skied the Silk Road.
