Self-Guided Bukhara Walking Tour: Every Monument in One Loop
· 8 min read · City Guide
Skip the $40 guide. Bukhara's old town is so compact you can walk every major monument in half a day — here's the exact loop, in order, with what to skip.
Bukhara is the easiest old town in Central Asia to walk: everything important sits inside a 1.5 km radius. This loop covers all the must-sees in roughly 4 hours of walking + visiting.
Start: Lyabi-Hauz (9:00)
Begin at the central pool surrounded by mulberry trees. The Kukeldash and Nadir Divan-Begi madrasas frame it on two sides. Coffee at Caravan Café before you set off.
Trading domes (9:45)
Walk west through three covered markets — Toki Sarrafon (money changers), Toki Telpak Furushon (hat makers), Toki Zargaron (jewellers). Real artisans still work here, prices are 40% better than Samarkand.
Po-i-Kalyan complex (11:00)
The icon: the 47m Kalyan Minaret (Genghis Khan reportedly spared it because he was so impressed), Kalyan Mosque, and Mir-i-Arab Madrasa opposite. Climb the minaret if it's open. Easily the most spiritual square in Uzbekistan.
Ark Fortress (12:30)
The emir's citadel — a city within a city until 1920. The Russian bombs of 1920 destroyed most interior buildings but the walls remain. 1 hour is enough.
Bolo Hauz Mosque (13:30)
Across from the Ark — 20 carved wooden columns reflected in a pool. Quiet, free, the locals' favourite.
Lunch (14:00)
Old Bukhara on a Lyabi-Hauz rooftop, or Chinar opposite the trading domes. Order Bukharan plov — sweeter than Tashkent style, with raisins and quince.
Afternoon: Chor Minor + Sitorai Mokhi-Khosa
Walk 10 minutes east to Chor Minor (the four-tower mini madrasa on every postcard). For the afternoon, taxi to the Summer Palace 4 km north — a wild mix of Russian and Bukharan architecture, almost empty of tourists.
Sunset spot
Rooftop of Minzifa Restaurant. Book by 17:00 for a sunset table over the rooftops and the Kalyan Minaret.
